Project "Shadow Economy"

Growth of research on the shadow economy accelerated tremendously during recent years. In times of pressure on public finances in industrial countries due to relatively low economic growth, persistent unemployment, aging, and widening inequality of income under globalization, politicians increasingly criticize tax avoidance, unofficial labor and “unsocial behavior”. At the same time economic research extends more and more into the area of morality, social norms and social capital, happiness, and finds strong evidence in experiments for social interactions such as reciprocity and fairness effects. Despite this rapid growth in research methods there are important gaps in the shadow economy literature and a growing political interest in the informal sector.
